Minutes of meeting 6th November 2024

1.Present and Apologies

Present: Nicola Dixon, Sheila Mullen, Martin Cox, Michele Robillard, Toni & Christine Mundel, Nigel Walker, Kate & Roger Woods, John & Tricia Sharp.

2. Minutes of last meeting (11th September 2024) and Matters arising

The Minutes were approved. There were no matters arising not covered in the Agenda.

 

3.  Reports

4. May 2025 Visit to Nogent

Nogent has asked how many members from Beverley would like to attend. There are those who have hosts (Sheila & Dave, Kate & Roger), and there are those who might  like to go but do not yet have accommodation  and/or who are as yet undecided (Michele, the Sharps, Martin, Brigitte). It was suggested that the Mayor of Beverley should be invited. Toni & Christine are not going but they reported that their host, Bernard, is not well. The meeting voted to send commiserations and best wishes for recovery.

 

5. Autumn 2025 Visit from Fuccechio

The suggested weekend is 13th/14th December. The number of visitors is expected to be around 15, There is a new chair of the Fuccechio Association, Antonella.

 

6. Beverley Town Council

Toni and Martin have made a joint application, for a grant to be shared, from the Lemgo and Beverley Associations to Beverley Town Council.  The Council is keen for the two twinning groups to work together. The Town Council’s decision will be announced on Weds 13th November.

 

Beverley themed souvenirs – the Beverley Bookshop has several. It was suggested that we or the Council commission a mug with all the twin town logos.

 

Tourist information is available in German, but also needs to be translated into French, Italian and Dutch.

 

7. Social Events and Fundraising

 Elwell’s dinner - November 28th.  There are now 16 takers. Raffle £2.00 a strip – organiser?

 

Film Night – 28th February 2025. Michèle will check the date of the AFS film night, and will invite AFS members to ours.

 

Wine tasting – 29th January 2025 at Monks Walk. Martin will talk to Gill about food, e.g. pizzas or cheese & biscuits, and about the price. Martin will let Nicola know the details so that she can design a poster. It was suggested that we have a raffle as well.

 

Other fund raising ideas – Nicola suggested that we join the Tesco charity donation scheme, or do a bag pack. 

 

The Dogger Bank Wind Farm Trust will give money up £1000 to local groups. Martin and Nigel will investigate, and also KCOM, who also give out money.

 

The Big Bench Project – Nigel spoke to this. The idea comes from Italy and there are now many in Europe.   A Big Bench in Beverley – possibly by the Beck – would be a tourist attraction, and also a form of cultural exchange.  The project requires a small working party, a Constitution, a bank account and a spokesperson. Nigel and Nicola will contact the Town Council re: private land ownership.

 

8. Other Twinning Associations

A visit to Stendhal took place on October 24th with Lemgo Twinning members presenting a Certificate of Friendship between Stendhal and Beverley. There will be a joint visit from Lemgo and Stendhal to Beverley in September 2025. The Lemgo Anniversary will be held in June 2025.

 

9. Christmas Tree

The tree can be decorated all day from 8am onwards on Tuesday 3rd December. Michèle has the decorations. Nigel offered to help, also John & Tricia Sharpe and Kate & Roger Woods.

 

10. AOB

Exchange students – this project should be repeated.  In order to find ways to promote exchanges of students in future a small working group needs to be formed. Nicola will meet with language teachers from local schools.
